There is a curious thing happening with the Jesus freaks lately. They’ve started marketing. I’ve noticed a lot less formality in the signs spruiking Christian spirituality. On the church just beside Manly Dam: “He’s back!!” written in a “fun” font. Gone are hints to go look up Proverbs 26 and such shenanigans, replaced instead with what are essentially slogans. “Sick and tired of feeling empty inside, try all new and improved religion!!”. Cheaper than heroin. Healthier than booze. And just as useful. It seems that even though Jebus came back from the dead, he’s not able to get the numbers up for a passtime that is dwindling as the intelligence of the Western World increases.
Religion is on my mind because I woke from what was a very odd dream. I regularly have celebrities and well known folk show up for cameos and this morning was the turn of the infamous L Ron Hubbard. No secrets about my thoughts on Scientology. The dream had me being shunned by the Scientologists because I was naked. I was surrounded by them but they weren’t allowed talk to me… lots of feelings of pressure and exclusion. It culminated in my walking out with a “Go fuck yourselves you freaks”. A really really really weird dream and I’m sure there won’t be a mention in the dream books.
So Proverbs 26 is quite nice: “An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.”
And lastly, a lovely argument from Greek philosopher Epicurus about the existence of evil a la God:
“Either God wants to abolish evil, and cannot; or he can and does not want to.
If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent.
If he can, but does not want to, he is wicked.
If, as they say, God can abolish evil, and God really wants to do it, why is there evil in the world?”
And really lastly, will this post result in a hack on the site???
Epicurus put to words what I’ve had swirling around in my brain since I was 12, and his philosophy is probably the closest to anything I’ve ever identified with. After that is Pat Ingoldsby.
